Mountaineers Fall to Northwest in Overtime

 KIRKLAND, Wash. – Tony Eackles Jr. hit a three pointer with three seconds to go in the second half to force the game to overtime against Northwest University. The Eagles used an 11-0 run in overtime to pull away from EOU and the Mountaineers were defeated by Northwest, by a score of 93-84. 

Five Mountaineers scored in double figures led by Eackles' 28 points. Eackles shot 9-of-18 from the floor. Trevor Phillips followed with 16 points. Kalvin Johanson and Craig Tucker added 12 points a piece, while Deonta Edwards scored 11 points.

EOU started shooting the ball well from the field as they raced out to an early 10-2 lead over the Eagles. Tony Eackles Jr. and Kalvin Johanson scored four points each to lead the way for Eastern Oregon.

Northwest slowly started to make a comeback and cut the Mountaineers lead to three points, 12-9, after Michael Russo hit a pair of free throws. Russo scored seven of the first nine points for the Eagles. However, EOU extended its lead after Edwards hit back-to-back three pointers for EOU.

Eastern Oregon and Northwest continued to battle and after a pair of free throws by Eackles, the Mountaineers held a four point lead, 28-24. However, seven straight points by Northwest gave the Eagles its first lead of the contest.

The lead did not last long as EOU answered with four straight points to take the lead back. EOU held a lead of 36-31 but Northwest scored the last five points of the half and EOU took a one point lead, 36-35, into halftime.

The Mountaineers and Eagles were locked in a back and forth battle in the second half. With EOU leading, 39-37, Tommy Jordan hit a three pointer giving the Eagles its second lead of the game. Jordan extended Northwest's lead to four points, 43-39, on the next possession as he hit his second three pointer of the game.

Both teams continued to battle and EOU trimmed the lead down to one point, 45-44, after a jumper by Eackles. However, the Eagles scored the next four points to take a five point lead. Eastern Oregon answered right back as Eackles hit a three pointer from the top of the key and a Northwest was called for goaltending on a Trevor Phillips layup. Phillips was fouled on the play and he made the free throw to put EOU on top, 50-49.

EOU grew its lead back out to five points, 60-55, after Eackles corralled a loose ball around the hoop and made the layup. Eastern Oregon looked as if they were slowly pulling away as they continued to hold a five point lead, 62-57.

However, Northwest had a different idea and the Mountaineers lead was cut to two after an old fashion three point play by Russo. With EOU ahead, 62-60, Michael Greene scored the next seven points for Northwest and EOU found themselves down 67-64.

EOU continued to battle and it looked as if EOU was running out of time. Eastern Oregon found themselves down three points, 71-68, with seven minutes left in the game. Eastern Oregon forced a turnover by Northwest with seven seconds remaining in the game. After an EOU time, Eackles hit a three pointer tying the game at 71-71 and forcing overtime.

Early in overtime the Mountaineers and Eagles traded buckets and after a three by Eackles tied the game at 76-76, the Eagles pulled away. Northwest went on an 11-0 run that put Northwest on top 85-76. EOU continued to battle but could not come all the way back and fell to Northwest, 93-84.
