Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon Men's basketball team won their opening game of the Quinn Classic tonight against Carroll College, 80-67.
The Mountaineers had three player finish in double digits,
Trevor Phillips led the way with 24 points and 5 rebound.
Craig Tucker and Tony Eackles each added 15 points respectively.
The Fighting Saints were led by Zach Taylor with 18 points, while teammates Jake Hollifield contributed with 14 and Dennis Mikelonis with 12.
In an evenly matched first half, that saw two lead changes and seven ties, a last minute basket from EOUs Tucker put the Mountaineers up three going into the locker room, 34-31.
Eastern would shoot 13-of-31 (41%) from the field and 4-of-12 (33%) from behind the arc. Carroll shot 10-of-26 (38%) from the field and 2-of-9 (22%) from the three point line.
The second half continued much like the first until Eastern held Carroll scoreless for nearly two minutes and built their lead to as much as 16 after a fast break by Phillips with 7:43 left to play in the game. The Saint would not going away and come as close at eight after a basket by Carroll's Zack Taylor with 54 seconds on the clock. Carroll would not be able to convert in the final seconds and Eastern would hold on for the win, 80-67.
EOU finished the night shooting 27-of-58 (46%) from the field and 10-of-23 (43%) from downtown. Carroll finished 22-of-58 (37%) from the field and just 4-of-16 (25%) from behind the arc.
Eastern will play again tomorrow night in game four of the Quinn Classic at 7:30 pm against Walla Walla University. Live stats and video will be available at EOUsports.com
