EOU Extends Winning Streak to 15

KIRKLAND, Wash. – It was not easy but the No. 10 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball team extended its winning streak to 15 with a, 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 23-25, 27-25) victory over Northwest (Wash.) on Saturday evening.

Taylor Stewart led the way for the Mountaineers with a game-high 20 kills. Casey Loper followed with 16 and Stefani Sorensen followed with 15 kills. Karly Stack dished out a game-high 57 assists.

Northwest came out swinging in set one as the Eagles raced out to an early 6-0 lead over EOU. Olivia Vandlac led the way as she recorded three aces during that stretch. However, the Mountaineers mounded its comeback.

EOU answered by scoring five straight and keeping the set close the rest of the way. Eastern Oregon came all the way back to tie it at 16-16 after a Katie Keeney service ace. The Eagles and Mountaineers traded leads until it was 22-22. Northwest scored the next two points to take a 24-22 lead before EOU mounted its second comeback of the set. Eastern Oregon scored the last four points of the set to take set one, 26-24.

The Mountaineers came out on fire in set two, as they opened up the set on a 7-1 run. The Eagles tried to make a comeback and cut the lead to three at 9-6 but EOU continued to pull to extend its lead. EOU grew its lead to eight, 18-10, after a Loper kill. Northwest could not mount a comeback and EOU took sets two, 25-15, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three was a back and forth battle. Eastern Oregon took the first lead of the set at, 7-3, after a Keeney kill. However, the Eagles answered right back and tied the match and keep it close until it was tied 10-10. With the set tied the Eagles scored eight of the next eleven points to take an 18-13 lead.

Eastern Oregon had an answer and fought back to tie the set at 19. The set remained close the rest of the way. Northwest took a 21-21 lead after a Sarah Stoker kill and never looked back in the set. Northwest took set three, 25-23, and trimmed the EOU lead to 2-1.

The Mountaineers looked as if they would run away with set four, but the Eagles had a different idea. EOU came out and took an 8-4 lead but the lead didn't last long as the Eagles scored four straight to tie the set at eight.

EOU looked as if they were pulling away again as they grew a lead to 13-9 after a Karly Stack kill but the Eagles mounted a comeback and tied the set at 15. The rest of the way the set was within three points. With the set tied at 24, Kasaundra Tuma recorded a kill to give EOU match point. However, Northwest scored the next point to tie the set at 25. EOU did not give the Eagles another chance as the Mountaineers finished off the set by scoring the last two points and taking set four, 27-25, and the match 3-1.

Eastern Oregon returns to the court next Friday, Oct. 18, when the Mountaineers travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho. The match is set to start at 6 p.m. PT.
