MEDFORD, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team won one of its three games Sunday, winning at Southern Oregon, but dropping a pair of games at No. 6 Oregon Tech.
The Mountaineers (7-11, 3-7 Cascade Collegiate Conference) played a trio of games that all were delayed due to wet weather. The second game against SOU was pushed back from Saturday, while the Tech doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday. The OIT and Eastern doubleheader was moved from Klamath Falls to Medford.
In Game 2 against Southern Oregon,
Kayla Anderson picked up the win for the Mountaineers, pitching a complete game while allowing seven hits with four strikeouts.
Karlie Stephens limited Eastern Oregon to three hits and no earned runs, but Southern Oregon left eight runners on base. The pitchers' duel took a pair of shutouts into the top of the sixth inning, when EOU scored the game's first run. The Mountaineers took advantage of a pair of SOU errors in the inning.
Suzie Espinoza reached on an error, with runners on first and second and two outs,
Alex Hillmick reached on another error that allowed the lead runner to score from second base.
Eastern Oregon added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, after another SOU (14-12, 4-5) fielding miscue. Ashli Hughes opened the inning with a double and came in to score when
Mariebeth Watanabe reached on an error.
In the first game against Oregon Tech, the Mountaineers allowed four runs in the second inning and four more runs in the fifth inning. Eastern had cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning. The Owls pulled out a 9-3 decision.
Eastern Oregon's Ashli Hughes,
Emily Anderson and
Alex Hillmick each had two hits. Hillmick was credited with the loss giving up 11 hits and striking out four batters in six innings.
Oregon Tech's Kayde Schaefer had three hits, scored three runs and had a pair of RBI to lead the Tech offense. Amber Knight added two hits and three RBI. Taylor Schmidt pitched a complete game, striking out six Mountaineers, giving up seven hits and three runs to improve to 12-2 on the season.
In Game 2, Tech (24-4, 7-1) opened the game with five runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, and seven in the fourth to ease to a 14-1 win in five innings.
The Owls' Jess Plummer hit her 10th home run of the season, and Amber Knight also hit her first home run of the year. Melissa Morgan pitched all five innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out three batters.
Anderson pitched four innings, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in a loss. Hillmick scored in her only at bat, while
Sarah Jackson hit a double for the Mountaineers.
Eastern Oregon is at No. 23 Corban University Thursday and Saturday in a pair of doubleheaders.
