Mountaineers Fall in Caldwell

CALDWELL, Idaho -- The Eastern Oregon University softball team dropped a pair of games at The College of Idaho Tuesday, 12-3 and 14-4.

The Lady Yotes (16-10, 8-4 Cascade Collegiate Conference) leapt out to a huge lead in the first inning in Game 1. The C of I tied a school record for the most runs scored in the first inning when it brought nine runners across home plate. College of Idaho's first seven batters reached base. Hannah Johnson highlighted the inning with an RBI triple.

The Yotes' Nickayla Skinner added a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to make the score, 12-0. Skinner (10-3) was credited with the victory after throwing all five innings. She allowed six hits and two earned runs. Skinner struck out five Mountaineers and walked two.

Eastern scored its first run in the top of the fourth inning when Stephanie Maestretti homered over the left field wall. Emily Anderson later scored on a C of I throwing error in the fifth inning. EOU left five runners on base in the game.

The second game was close early as The College of Idaho and Eastern each scored two runs to begin the game. The Yotes used three walks in the first inning to score their runs, and Anderson brought in EOU's runs with a single.

Britney Croner had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning to give C of I a 3-2 lead. The Yotes then blew the game open in the fourth when they scored 11 runs. Kalie Kurdy lined an RBI single, Skinner hit a two-run single, Croner added a two-run single, Nikki Shumway had an RBI double, with a pinch hit three-run homer from Paige Gabiola capping the rally.

Croner (2-5) recorded the victory, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in five innings. She struck out three batters and walked two. The Mountaineers' Jennifer McDonnell (2-12) struck out two Yotes and walked six others in the pair of games. Five different Mountaineers recorded two hits in the doubleheader.

Eastern (4-20, 1-11 CCC) travels to Eugene, Ore. for its next game at Northwest Christian University. The Mountaineers host Walla Walla University Sunday in their next home contest.
