LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team earned a split with the University of Great Falls Saturday, 5-1 and 1-4.
After holding Great Falls scoreless through the first three innings, the Mountaineers took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the third.
Emily Anderson tripled, and was then brought in after the next batter,
Wailana Buchanan, hit a double to right center field.
Eastern Oregon's
Jennifer McDonnell didn't allow a hit in the fourth inning, and the Mountaineers would take a 2-0 lead in the game with another run in the bottom half of the inning. Georgianna singled through the left side, driving in Jessy Reynolds.
Another hitless inning in the fifth for the Lady Argos was followed by more runs from EOU. The Mountaineers scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Buchanan scored off of an
Ashli Hughes single, and the
McKenzie Desin drove in two runs with two outs. Desin's single through the left side scored Hughes and McDonnell.
Great Falls would record three hits in the sixth inning, scoring a run in the process, but leaving three runners on base. Amanda Morris was brought in off of an Anna Owen single. The Argos would leave eight runners on base in the game, compared to nine for EOU.
McDonnell was credited with the win after pitching all seven innings and throwing 117 pitches. The sophomore struck out nine UGF batters and walked two others.
Eastern pitcher, Jessy Reynolds, allowed only two hits through the first three innings of the second game before Great Falls scored first with a Brittani Thibodeaux with a leadoff home run. UGF added a run in the top of the fifth inning with a Morris home run over the center field wall.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kelly grounded out, but brought in
Suzie Espinoza in the process. The Argos sealed the victory with two runs in the sixth inning with a two-run home run over the center field fence by Chea Hollis.
Eastern Oregon left two runners on base in the final two innings. The Mountaineers and UGF each left five runners stranded in the game. Kayla Souza received the win for Great Falls after striking out six EOU batters in five batters.
Eastern hosts The College of Idaho in the final games of the season Tuesday. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. at Peggy Anderson Field.
