LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Concordia University softball team picked up 5-0 and 4-2 victories in a conference doubleheader at Eastern Oregon University Friday.
The Cavaliers (17-12, 10-7 Cascade Collegiate Conference) held Eastern Oregon to just three hits in Game 1. Concordia jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Cameron Way started the scoring with a fly-out to right field that drove in Kayla Vickaryous. Ali Paz then crossed home plate off of an EOU error.
Concordia added runs in the third and fourth innings. Paz scored again in the top of the third after crossing the plate from third base off of a fielder's choice. Vickaryous took advantage of an Eastern throwing error and scored the fourth run.
Mariebeth Watanabe had EOU's first hit in the third inning with a single off a bunt.
Sarah Jackson added a hit in the bottom of the fifth with a single down the right field line.
The Cavaliers' final run was an emphatic seal to the victory. Kyndell Andrews hit a lead-off home run over the left field wall to open the sixth inning. Eastern's
Jennifer McDonnell would have a single to left field in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to score.
The Mountaineers left four runners on base in the game, while Concordia stranded five. Renee Santos was credited with the victory, and McDonnell had the loss. Santos pitched all seven innings, striking out 15 Eastern batters and walking one.
In the second game, Concordia got off to another 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Way drove in the first run with a single to right field that brought in Sam Genskay. Robin Gawlista then had a sacrifice fly that brought in Paz.
The Mountaineers would score their first runs of the day in the bottom of the third inning.
Emily Anderson hit a double to right center field that drove in
McKenzie Desin and
Stephanie Maestretti.
Way recorded her second RBI with a double in the fifth inning that scored Genskay. An Amy Aicher fly-out would drive in Paz for the insurance and final run of the game. The Mountaineers would leave a pair of runners on base in the sixth inning and another in the seventh inning.
Jordyn Brown received the win for the Cavaliers, and Santos was credited with the save. Concordia travels to The College of Idaho Saturday, while Eastern Oregon hosts the University of Great Falls.
