Mountaineer Softball Grabs Road Victory

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team picked up a big road victory at Southern Oregon University Sunday.

The Mountaineers (7-26, 2-17 Cascade Collegiate Conference) won the first game 4-2 and the second game was postponed due to rain until Monday at 2 p.m. with Eastern leading 3-2 going into the bottom of the third.

Southern Oregon's Karri Johnson allowed one hit through five innings and the Raiders had a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Irene Barrantes in the first and an unearned run in the fourth.

Eastern had a big sixth inning with singles by Mariebeth Watanabe, Emily Anderson and Sarah Jackson, and a double by Suzie Espinoza to take a 4-2 advantage.

SOU responded by putting a runner on in the bottom of the sixth and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't get the runs across.

Watanabe had two hits for EOU and Jennifer McDonnell held SOU (14-16, 11-8) to five hits to pick up the victory.

In the second game, Eastern scored three runs in the top of the first before SOU chipped away with a pair of runs. Rain finally made conditions unplayable in the middle of the third inning.
