Mountaineers Get First Home Sweep of Season

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball outscored Walla Walla University, 15-0, in a doubleheader sweep Sunday, 6-0 and 9-0.

The Mountaineers (6-24) scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning after a scoreless first inning. Stephanie Maestretti brought in Sarah Jackson on a single to right field. Two batters later, Emily Anderson doubled and drove in a pair of EOU runs. Jennifer McDonnell then scored Anderson with an RBI single to center field.

Eastern added a run in the fourth inning to finish the scoring. Mariebeth Watanabe led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Anderson then hit her second double of the day, driving in Watanabe.

McDonnell (3-14) had an outstanding day on the mound for EOU. The sophomore tossed a two-hitter through seven innings. She allowed a hit in the second and sixth innings. McDonnell struck out five WWU batters, and walked three others in the shutout.

Veronica Rojas led off the second game for the Wolves with a single up the middle. It would be the lone hit allowed by the Mountaineers' Jessy Reynolds. The freshman picked up her first win of her collegiate career. She allowed one hit and no runs through seven innings. The Union, Ore. native struck out two batters and walked a pair.

EOU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Wailana Buchanan drove in Watanabe with a single to left field to begin the scoring. Suzie Espinoza would later bring in Buchanan with a single to right field.

The Mountaineers would add three runs in the second inning, highlighted by doubles by Buchanan and McDonnell. Eastern sealed the victory with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning. McDonnell recorded another RBI double, and Buchanan would also hit another RBI in the inning.

Eastern Oregon travels to Klamath Falls for its next doubleheader at Oregon Tech Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the OIT campus. The Lady Owls swept EOU in the earlier season meeting in La Grande.
