LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team was swept on opening day of the 2011 home schedule by University of Great Falls.
In Game 1, the Mountaineers (0-7) held Great Falls scoreless the first two innings and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Argos responded with three runs in the top of the third. Eastern tied the score in the bottom half of the third.
The Mountaineers kept UGF off of the scoreboard in the next two innings, and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Argonauts answered again with another three-run inning. The breakout of runs in the top of the sixth seemed to be the difference. EOU would score in the sixth as well, but were unable to drive in the tying run.
Eastern left five runners on base, while the Argos left nine on. The Mountaineers had five runs on six hits, three RBI, and no errors. Great Falls finished with six runs on eight runs, and committed two errors. Each team hit a home run, but Amanda Morris and Stacy Gray each had doubles for UGF. Lindsay Cline was credited with the victory.
Eastern Oregon scored its most runs in a single game this season in nightcap, but failed to its first victory. The Mountaineers finished the game with 13 hits, but so did Great Falls. Neither side committed an error in Game 2.
The Lady Argos jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Eastern answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. UGF continued its scoring onslaught in the second with three more runs and one more run in the third to take an 8-2 lead. Neither team scored until the Mountaineers placed one run on the board in the bottom of the sixth.
After Great Falls scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, EOU mounted a rally attempt with a four-run outburst. The Mountaineers left seven runners on base in the game. UGF left seven on as well. Alyse Sifuentes recorded the win for the Argonauts.
Great Falls (2-2) played its first games this weekend at The College of Idaho and EOU after having its first eight games cancelled due to weather in California. Eastern hosts UGF Sunday in another doubleheader. Game 1's first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
