LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Oregon Institute of Technology swept a doubleheader meeting with Eastern Oregon University Saturday, 11-2 and 13-0.
The Lady Owls (19-6, 5-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference) remain atop the conference standings with their 10th victory in the last 11 games. Tech began the season selected second in the in the coaches' preseason conference poll.
Oregon Tech and EOU each went scoreless through the first two innings of play in Game 1. OIT got its first hit in the third inning when Brittany Cherry singled up the middle as the leadoff batter. The inning turned out to be the breakout part of the game as the Owls turned four more hits into six runs, and left the bases loaded.
Cherry would take advantage of a Mountaineer error and be the first to cross the plate. Shauna Collins scored as the next batter, Ashleigh Larson, reached on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Bree Larson brought in a pair of runs with a single to center field. Cherry and Collins each finished the inning with an RBI.
Eastern responded in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs courtesy of
Emily Anderson's fourth home run of the weekend. The junior brought in Jessy Reynolds with a shot over the right-center wall.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Tech put the game away in the fourth inning with five runs. Andria Wheatley singled to left-center and drove in Kayde Schaefer. A hit batter brought in the second run of the inning. Taylor Schmidt then hit a three-run home run over the center field wall.
The Mountaineers left five runners on base, while Oregon Tech stranded seven. The Owls committed no errors, but EOU had two. Jackie Imhof won her eighth game of the season, throwing all five innings. She allowed five hits and two earned runs. Imhof struck out nine Eastern batters and walked two.
Jennifer McDonnell allowed nine hits and three earned runs.
In the second game, Collins and Jess Plummer each had four RBI to lead OIT. On the mound, Schmidt stifled the Mountaineers (4-15, 1-7 CCC) throwing a one-hitter through the five-inning game. Schmidt allowed no runs, striking out two Eastern batters and walking three others.
Oregon Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning thanks to RBI from each of the Larsons. OIT added five more runs in the top of the second inning. Plummer connected on a deep shot over the left field fence for a grand slam.
With a 7-0 advantage after two innings, the Owls continued to cruise. Collins hit her third and fourth home runs of the season in the victory. OIT left five runners on base, while Eastern left three.
The Mountaineers play a non-conference doubleheader at George Fox University in Forest Grove Thursday, before they return to conference play at Concordia University (8-10, 1-5 CCC) Saturday. Oregon Tech host Northwest Christian and Corban University for its next games.
