Bruins Take Two from EOU Softball

GAME 1 BOX        GAME 2 BOX

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team fell in a pair of games at George Fox University Sunday, 5-2 and 4-3 in 10 innings.

After a scoreless first inning in Game 1, the Mountaineers (0-5) fell behind George Fox, 2-0, when the Bruins put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Nicole Renteria singled through the left side that drove in Hilary Broadus and Felecia Chavez with two unearned runs. Renteria would finish the game with three hits and three RBI.

Eastern Oregon was held hitless by Erin Hento until the fourth inning when Sarah Jackson singled for EOU's first hit. Wailana Buchanan and Rebecca Joseph followed with doubles, the latter driving in both runners. GFU got another in the bottom of the third on singles from Bethany Chriss and Becka Doyle and a sacrifice fly to right by Shelby Briske.

Jessy Reynolds allowed 10 hits in a complete game for the Mountaineers. The freshman allowed three earned runs, three walks, and threw one strikeout. EOU would leave four runners stranded on base, while George Fox left eight runners on base.

In the second game, the Bruins (5-5) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning behind two Eastern errors. Kris Trindle reached on a fielding error at third and later scoring on a throwing error at short for the first run, and Doyle later doubled in Chriss.

The Mountaineers took their first lead during the series when Jackson slugged a three-run home run to right-center in the third inning. Eastern's first home run of the year brought in Suzie Espinoza and Maribeth Watanabe, who had both singled to get on base. The Bruins tied it in the bottom of the fifth when Renteria singled, Kerrianne Davidson was hit by a pitch, and Chriss walked before Doyle hit a sacrifice fly down the right-field line.

Eastern failed to scored again as Bruin starter DenDekker and reliever Hento (4-0), who came in with one out in the top of the ninth and got her second win of the day, combined for seven shutout innings following the Jackson home run. Neither walked a batter, and Hento struck out three of the five outs she recorded.

George Fox scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning when Kayla Ward sacrificed Doyle to second before Briske lined the game-winning hit to center. The Mountaineers' Jennifer McDonnell allowed eight hits and gave up four runs, only two earned, with a strikeout and four walks.

Eastern Oregon has off until it hosts the University of Great Falls on March 5 in the 2011 home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader at Peggy Anderson Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
