Eastern Softball Falls In Season Opener

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team fell in its season opener at Pacific University Friday, 6-1.

The Mountaineers (0-1) were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Pacific, but after an hour and a half rain delay, the second game was cancelled. The Boxers used 12 hits and four Eastern errors to stretch a 1-1 game to the final score.

Madison Collura opened the scoring when she crossed the plate in the first inning after an EOU error with two outs. The Mountaineers evened the score when Ashli Hughes scored off of a Mariebeth Watanabe sacrifice in the top of the second inning.

After allowing no hits in the bottom of the second, Eastern Oregon gave up three hits and two runs in the third inning. Jenna Stevens led off the inning with a single and came around to score after Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen reached on an error, Jordan Mittelsdorf added another single to score Vanoudenhaegen.

Pacific added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 5-1. Lauren Reichert, the Boxers second batter of the inning, hit a double to right center. She advanced to second on a Danielle Ashcraft single and then scored on a Stevens' double. Ashcraft would score Pacific's second run of the inning on a Brooke Toy sacrifice fly to right field.

One more run was added to Pacific's total in the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Billingsley started the inning with a double off the centerfield fence, Randee Layosa came in as a pinch runner and added a run after advancing to third on a Mittelsdorf single and scoring on a Lauren Tuey single.

The Boxers (3-0) kept Eastern Oregon from scoring after the second inning and allowed them just three hits over seven innings of play and committed no errors. Offensively, Collura and Stevens was 2-for-2, Vanoundenhaegen was 2-for-3 and Mittelsdorf was 2-for-4.

Jennifer McDonnell was credited with the loss for the Mountaineers after allowing three runs in two hits through 2.0 innings. Jessy Reynolds came in and pitched the final four innings. Chelsey Chamberlain picked up the win for Pacific. EOU left nine runners on base, while the Boxers left eight.

Eastern travels to Newberg, Ore. Saturday for a doubleheader at George Fox University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon. No live coverage is available for the game.
