EOU Volleyball Takes Care of Beacons

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team knocked off Northwest Christian University Saturday, 3-0.

The Mountaineers (5-2) (2-0) won their fourth consecutive match, and all have been 3-0 sweeps. Eastern defeated NCU, 25-16, in the first game after jumping out to a 14-1 lead thanks to a Katie Showers kill. EOU led by 13 three times in the set. Eastern Oregon had 16 kills in Game 1, compared to the Beacons' eight.

Northwest Christian led 5-2 early in the second game, but Eastern would battle back to tie the set at six after a kill by Jessica Lea. The set remained close as Janel Fetters had a kill for NCU that made the score 15-13 in favor of EOU. The Mountaineers then made a 5-0 run to have a comfortable 20-13 lead. A Northwest Christian attack error ended the game at 25-16 for Eastern.

Eastern and the Beacons battled early in the third set with the game being tied five times. The Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run and spread the lead to 10 points and eventually won the set, 25-11. EOU had 11 kills compared to Northwest Christian's six in the final game.

Eastern Oregon had 40 kills, while NCU had 25 in the match. The Mountaineers also had a 38 to 25 assist advantage, but the Beacons had 46 digs and EOU had 44.

Lea finished with a match-high 14 kills and added 15 assists and six digs. Emily Sampson led EOU with 19 assists and Leigh Anne MacCarthy had 10 digs. Lisa Steinbach made four blocks in the match. Chelsie Joyce had a team-high six kills for NCU, and Cori Wallace finished with a match-high 21 assists. Bridget Marasigan had a Beacon-high 14 digs.

The Mountaineers travel to Southern Oregon Friday for their next match. Northwest Christian plays Walla Walla University in Forest Grove, Ore. Wednesday at 7 p.m.
