LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team closed the 2010 season with a sweep over Walla Walla University, 10-1 and 4-0.
The Mountaineers (14-25) got a pair of home runs from
Krista Kountz. The senior capped off her career by hitting her fifth and sixth home runs at EOU, also her second and third of the season. The Vancouver, Wash. native recorded her 24th RBI of the season, and 32nd of her career.
Eastern jumped ahead of the Wolves (9-18) in Game 1 by scoring four runs in the first inning.
Kassi Reisbeck got the run started with a lead-off triple. She would score off of a wild pitch with the ensuing batter.
Ashli Hughes brought in
Ashleigh Byrne with a groundout for the second run. Kountz's two run home run brought
Iris Woodhead across home plate.
Walla Walla failed to score in the top of the second inning, but EOU scored six more runs. WWU was held hitless for the first three innings. After giving up no hits in the first game through the first three innings, Jen McDonnell allowed two hits in her eight innings Wednesday. The freshman walked four batters, struck out three batters, and allowed no runs. She was credited with both wins and finished the season, 13-22.
Reisbeck opened the bottom of the second with a double to left field, followed by a Byrne double that drove in Reisbeck. Woodhead then connected on a two-run home run to give EOU a 7-0 lead. A
Megan Hardman double finished the highlights in the inning, as Eastern added three more runs.
Teri Pardue came in the close for the Mountaineers allowing one run on three hits in two innings on the mound.
Kountz got EOU out to an early again the second game with a first inning three-run home run. Both teams battled wind, rain, solid pitching, and good defense the rest of the game. Eastern Oregon loaded the bases in the second and fourth innings, but managed to get only one run across the plate in the fourth. The teams combined for three hits over the final 2.5 innings.
