Yotes and Lightning Strike Mountaineers

CALDWELL, Idaho – After falling in the first game the Eastern Oregon University softball team had its second game with The College of Idaho interrupted Tuesday due to lightning.

The Mountaineers (11-20) (3-14) lost Game 1, 11-7; despite taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning after a Krista Kountz two-run home run. Game 2 was suspended due to lightning with the Lady Yotes leading 5-2 in the fourth inning, and after a 64 minute delay the umpires called the action for the night. The game will resume at an undetermined later date, if necessary.

Eastern Oregon had trouble stopping Nikki Shumway and the C of I (12-17) (8-9). The sophomore went 3 for 4 with a home run. The Boise native finished with three RBI in Game 1.

Hughes added to the Kountz home run in the top of the first inning with an RBI single. However, the Yotes battled back and took advantage of two walks, four infield singles, and a pair of EOU throwing errors to plate five runs to regain the lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Shumway's two-run home run in the fourth inning added to the College of Idaho lead. It was only two of the five runs C of I would score in the bottom half of the frame.

EOU added a run in the top half of the following inning when Iris Woodhead drove in Kassi Reisbeck off of a sacrifice fly to right field. Reisbeck would score again in the final inning after hitting a triple down the left field line to get her on base.

Hughes gave the Mountaineers a quick 2-0 lead in Game 2 with a home run in the first inning. But the Yotes countered with a Dani Villyard home run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. An inning later, Shumway hit a two-run double to push the margin to 4-2. Leading 5-2, the game was stopped three pitches into the fourth inning when lightning was three miles from the field. With the storm lasting over an hour, the umpire crew deemed the field unsafe.

Eastern travels to Corban College Friday for the first of six games in a three-day span. Game 1 in Salem begins at 2 p.m. Friday.
