Mountaineers Can't Stop SOU Raid

Southern sours Senior Day in La Grande

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team had trouble slowing down a potent Southern Oregon offensive attack Saturday in La Grande and was swept 11-1 and 12-6.

The Raiders (11-17) (7-7) rebounded after being swept at The College of Idaho Friday, but EOU fell for the 13th consecutive time. The Mountaineers are now 0-10 at home this season. Southern won its eighth game away from Ashland.

The 23 SOU runs in the doubleheader are the most since the Raiders scored 32 in a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Oregon in 2006.

In the opener, the Raiders had nine hits and also benefitted from six EOU errors. Southern Oregon led 4-1 before exploding in the top of the seventh. A single by senior Justine Fulton was followed by just one

more hit, a double by Kathryn Moy, but four Mountaineer errors helped the Raiders put a seven-spot up in the inning.

Eastern (9-17) (1-11) had eight hits in the opener, but could only muster one run. Ashli Hughes scored the run after Shelby Spencer reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth inning. Iris Woodhead and Kassi Reisbeck each finished with two hits in the first game.

Meghan Laughlin led the Raiders with two hits. Starting pitcher Karri Johnson picked up the victory to improve to 6-2 in conference play and also scored three runs. In the circle, Johnson struck out a season-high eight and only walked two.

Jennifer McDonnell was credited with the loss after throwing 6.1 innings. The freshman allowed eight hits and two earned runs. She walked three batters and struck out three. Eastern left 12 runners on base in Game 1.

In the nightcap, senior Southern Oregon's Danielle Stratton took advantage of her first start of the year with a pair of extra base hits for the Raiders. The first big blast came in the top of the first with a three-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning.

In the top of the second, the Raiders received another home run, this time off the bat of junior Sarah Wharton. Wharton hit a three-run shot to straight-away centerfield to help take the Raiders take a 10-2 lead after an inning-and-a-half.

SOU wrapped up its scoring in the top of sixth as Stratton scored a pair with a double to right. Freshman pitcher Jessica Flores picked up the victory in the circle for Southern as she scattered nine hits over seven innings. Stratton finished the game with two hits and five RBI.

The Mountaineers used four pitchers in Game 2, Whitney Hodges picked up the loss. EOU scored two runs in the bottom of the first after falling behind 6-0. Hughes brought in Reisbeck with a single to centerfield. Krista Kountz was credited with a sacrifice fly with a pop-out to centerfield that scored Woodhead.

After Reisbeck scored Nyssa Salazar in the second inning, Eastern Oregon added two runs in the fourth inning. A pair of Raider errors equaled a pair of Mountaineer runs, when Reisbeck and Woodhead each scored again on the errors.

After the second game, EOU honored four seniors, Byrne, Megan Hardman, Kountz, and Woodhead, by having each senior plant an evergreen shrub at Peggy Anderson Field. It's a tradition that will now be annually at Eastern Oregon University.

Eastern hosts The College of Idaho Thursday in La Grande. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 30 but was postponed due to inclement weather. SOU welcomes Northwest Christian University to Ashland Friday for its next contest.
