LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team was swept by the University of Great Falls Sunday, 4-3 and 9-4.
The Argos (14-7) scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to win the first game. UGF got out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning after Anna Owen and Sarah DeVore each recorded RBI.
Neither team would score again until the Mountaineers (9-11) (1-5) evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashley Hughes hit a deep shot over the center field fence. It was her first home run of the season.
Krista Kountz would score later off of a
Suzie Espinoza sacrifice fly in right field.
Eastern's
Jennifer McDonnell would ground out to third base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but drive in
Megan Hardman for the go-ahead score. Great Falls' Micaela Kurth would drive in Emily Graham on a ground out in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game again. Brittanie Thibodeaux was the next batter and singled up the middle scoring Jenn Andrews for the final run.
Ashley Densmore improved to 4-0 on the season for UGF. She allowed five hits and two earned runs in
seven innings. Densmore struck out eight batters and walked three. The Argos left seven batters on base and EOU left six. McDonnell (8-9) gave up eight hits and four earned runs. The freshman struck out eight batters and walked two.
The Mountaineers fell behind early in the second game and lost, 9-4, despite four RBI from
Iris Woodhead. The senior drove in every run Eastern had in the loss after going 2 for 4 from the plate.
Great Falls broke out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and extended the margin to 8-0 after the top of the fifth inning. The Argos recorded five hits in the first two innings.
Woodhead hit a double off of the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. The deep shot cleared the bases and scored three Mountaineers. Woodhead doubled to center field in the bottom of the seventh to score
Kassi Reisbeck.
Casey Olson is now 4-0 on the mound. The sophomore gave up no earned runs and three hits in three innings.
Whitney Hodges was credited with the loss for Eastern Oregon.
EOU returns to Cascade Collegiate Conference play Tuesday against The College of Idaho at 3 p.m.
