REDDING, Calif. -- The Eastern Oregon University softball team won a game on the road at Simpson University Sunday.
The Mountaineers battled with Simpson (21-10) and left with a split. The Redhawks took the first game, 3-2. Eastern Oregon rallied to win the second game, 6-3.
“Great job by the girls today,” EOU head coach Missy Wheeler said. “It was a team effort. The pitchers did a great job and we had timely hitting. I am pleased with a split and our team effort after a tough day yesterday.”
Eastern rallied from a 2-0 deficit and tied Game 1 in the top of the fourth inning. But SU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mountaineers held the Redhawks scoreless for the rest of the game, but failed to cross home plate again.
EOU left six runners on base and had five hits in the opening game. The Mountaineers fine fielding continued against Simpson committing only one error. Eastern's
Jennifer McDonnell (7-2) threw a complete game, allowing five hits and three earned runs. The freshman struck out six batters and walked one.
Amanda Crocker picked up the victory for Simpson. The sophomore struck out six batters, and walked one batter. Crocker allowed two earned runs.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning of Game 2. Eastern Oregon (8-4) (1-3) responded with a three-run, four-hit, top of the second inning.
Ashli Hughes went 4 for 4 and helped the Mountaineers to the win.
McDonnell picked up the first victory for EOU. Eastern had 11 hits in the second game and committed only one error. Simpson had four hits and three errors. The Mountaineers left eight runners on base, compared to the Redhawks six.
Eastern Oregon travels to Atherton, Calif. to play at Menlo College Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Oaks (3-17) have lost seven straight games.
