KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Oregon Institute of Technology softball team swept Eastern Oregon University Saturday in a doubleheader, 7-3, and 13-2.
The Mountaineers (7-3) (1-3) fell for the third straight time after starting the season 7-0. The Hustlin' Owls won for the third consecutive outing.
“We need to focus on being more consistent and aggressive at the plate,” EOU head coach Missy Wheeler said. “It's nice to get a win in this series, but we will need to take the next six games to work on some things in preparation for conference next week.”
Eastern Oregon's
Jennifer McDonnell was handed her first loss in Game 1. The freshman is now 6-1. She gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings in the first game. Becca Anderson improved to 5-4 with the victory.
Oregon Tech (15-11) (3-1) got out to a 2-0 in the first inning courtesy of a Ashleigh Larson double that drove in Kelsey Wheatley. Larson would score when the next batter, Jess Plummer, singled to center field.
EOU scored a run in the top of the third inning after
Iris Woodhead brought
Kassi Reisbeck across home plate with a single. Tech would then score another run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mountaineers added two runs over the next two innings to cut the lead to 4-3. Eastern failed to score again and OIT put three more runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Eastern Oregon committed one error and left seven runners on base in Game 1. EOU had eight hits in the first game, while the Owls had 10. Oregon Tech committed two errors and left eight runners on base.
In Game 2, Oregon Tech jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first inning. The Owls had six hits and left no runners on base in the big opening inning. The game ended after five innings, 13-2.
McDonnell suffered her second loss, and Taylor Schmidt won her seventh game on the mound for OIT. Plummer led the first inning scoring for Tech with a two run home run over the left field fence. Larson added a three-run RBI double to left center in the bottom half of the first.
Eastern's
Ashleigh Byrne scored on a Reisbeck single in the top of the third inning. Reisbeck finished 3 for 3 in the game, and 4 for six for the day. Oregon Tech added three runs in the bottom half of the inning. A McDonnell double scored
Wailana Buchanan in the top of the fourth inning to complete the scoring.
The Mountaineers will travel 141 miles to Redding, Calif. to Simpson University for Sunday's doubleheader. The Redhawks (18-9) have won 10 out their last 11 games. EOU travels to Menlo and William Jessup in California Tuesday and Wednesday.
