ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 20 Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team fell at Southern Oregon Friday, 69-53.
The Mountaineers (10-2) (2-1) had their seven game win streak snapped, and fell for the first time this season in Cascade Conference play.
Kyle Miller led EOU with 16 points. The junior was only one point off of her season high after shooting 5 of 10 from the field.
Shaylee Nielsen added 13 points for Eastern. The Raiders held EOU to a season-low 53 points.
Southern shot 31 percent from behind the perimeter (6 of 19). EOU came into the game holding opponents to a NAIA Div. 2 best 19 percent shooting from behind the arc. The Mountaineers were also best in the nation in shooting from three-point range at 44 percent. Friday EOU was held to 33 percent (6 for 18). The Raiders were 43 percent from the field. Eastern was 34 percent from the field in the game.
The Mountaineers had a pair of two-point leads to begin the game, and then forced three ties early in the contest. But, the game belonged to Southern. The Raiders opened up a 14-14 score to 27-16, its largest lead of the first half with 8:52 left before halftime. Seven minutes later a Miller layup tied the game for the last time at 30.
The Raiders (8-6) (2-1) ended the half of on a 7-0 run, and then opened the second half on an 11-1 run. A Josi McDermott layup with 6:26 left in the game gave SOU its largest lead at 62-40.
Jamie Roupp scored a team-high 14 points for Southern. She also threw a game-high five assists. Whitney Scott and Alexi Smith added 13 and 11 points respectively. Smith added eight rebounds. SOU outrebounded the Mountaineers 46-32. Southern Oregon also had 13 assists to Eastern's five. EOU entered the game averaging a CCC-best 18 assists per game. Eastern Oregon also committed 19 turnovers to the Raiders' 16.
The Mountaineers travel to Oregon Tech for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Saturday. OIT (8-7) (0-3) lost at home to The College of Idaho Friday, 73-53. Live video, stats, and a blog will be available on EOUSports.com.
