Eastern Women Soar to Victory

Samantha Flett's points lead to Mountaineer victory at Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team picked up a big conference win at Southern Oregon Saturday, 74-56.

The Mountaineers were led by Samantha Flett's season-high 20 points. The junior recorded her first double-double at EOU with 11 rebounds as well. She went 8 for 12 from the field, and 3 for 4 from behind the perimeter. Flett also led the Mountaineers with three assists.

Eastern (14-7) (8-3) shot 52 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the perimeter. The Mountaineer defense held the Raiders to 35 percent shooting from the field in the game. Eastern outrebounded SOU, 42-29. Southern Oregon did force 20 EOU turnovers, while only committing 16.

Ashlee Michelson added 17 points for the Mountaineers, along with nine rebounds. Tana Stickney finished with 15 points.

Jacki Speer led Southern Oregon (15-7) (4-7) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Brookins added nine points for the Raiders.

Eastern had solid control of the game and led for the majority of the contest. The Raiders made a run before the half and cut the lead to 32-28 going in to the locker room for the intermission. EOU would regain a double-digit lead and coast for the rest of the evening.

The win is the first in three years for the Mountaineers in Ashland. Eastern is now 14-2 when it holds opponents under 60 points this season. The victory also completes a regular season sweep over the Raiders.

Eastern Oregon hosts Warner Pacific (13-7) (8-3) Friday night in La Grande. The Mountaineers used a Kyle Miller buzzer beater to defeat the Knights on Dec. 31, 2009. Friday's game will pit a pair of teams tied for second place in the conference standings.

It will also be “Pack the Gym” night at EOU. Fans who arrive in the first half of the women's game can get a general admission ticket for $1. The first 100 students through the door receive a free “Wear White Get Loud” T-Shirt. It's White Out night at Quinn Coliseum.
