EOU Women Upset No. 9 Raiders

Mountaineers stun Southern Oregon by four in La Grande

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team upset No.9 Southern Oregon Friday night, 61-57.

Despite a monster double-double performance by Southern Oregon's Jacki Speer, 18 points and 20 rebounds, the Mountaineers led for almost the entirety of the win. Speer's 20 rebounds were the highest the All-American selection has had in conference play in her four-years at SOU.

Shaylee Nielsen led three Eastern double-digit scorers. The junior finished with 15 points, shooting 6 for 13 from the field and 3 for 4 from behind the perimeter. The transfer from Snow College has totaled 41 points in the Mountaineers' last three games.

Kelsea Hurliman came off of the bench to score 11 points for EOU (7-5) (2-1). The freshman scored double-digits for the third time already this season. All 11 of her points came in the second half. Ashlee Michelson totaled 10 points and now averages 10.9 points per game.

The Raiders (12-2) (1-2) would get as close as three points with 1:19 remaining in regulation, but it was Eastern who led by as many as 12 points. EOU led 28-24 at halftime after stretching the lead to eight in the first half.

Each team shot 35 percent from the field, and 47 percent from the free throw line. The Mountaineers made 8 of their 16 three-pointers, while SOU made 4 of 16 from behind the arc.

Eastern Oregon will look for its third conference win in four games Saturday against Oregon Tech in La Grande. The Lady Owls suffered a 99-63 setback at The College of Idaho Friday.
