SALEM, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University Cross Country teams had a great showing at the tough Charles Bowles/Willamette Invite Saturday.
The Mountaineer men finished fifth out of 24 teams in the 35th annual event and the women came in eighth out of 19 solid programs. The EOU men were led by DJ Flores who ran the fastest time in Eastern history by a true freshman, 25:14. Eastern Oregon beat out No. 22 Azusa Pacific and seven other Cascade Conference foes. No. 6 Southern Oregon won the event.
Flores was followed closely by Terry Johnsen with a time of 25:20, Kody Koxen's 25:30, Justin Dean's 25:48 and Devin White's 25:52. All five of the Mountaineer men that scored ran lifetime personal records. Nine out of the 11 EOU men who ran raced to personal records as well.
The Eastern Oregon women ran to a eighth place finish behind teams that were ranked in the NAIA. Six of the seven programs ahead of EOU were ranked in the top 20. The meet was won by the nation's top team, Azusa Pacific.
Karlee Coffey led the Mountaineers with a 17:58. Sarah Hanchett dropped 36 seconds off of her personal record with an 18:42 finish. Nancy Cardenas 19:11, Alma Garcilazo 19:16 and Talissa Baldovino 19:35 rounded out the EOU women scoring.
Eastern will take a week off before hosting the EOU Open on Saturday, Oct. 17. The meet will feature NCAA Div. 2's Northwest Nazarene.
