Rodriguez Punches Ticket to Day Three

PARK CITY, Kan. – Day two of the NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championships concluded Friday, with Eastern Oregon returning two wrestlers to the mats and advancing one into Saturday's placement rounds.

The Mounties brought back Braden Carson (133) and Nico Rodriguez (285), both competing in the consolation bracket.

Carson dropped his opening match of the day, falling in a 6-0 decision to No. 3 Matthew Terrence of Doane, ending his tournament run.

Rodriguez continued his comeback through the consolation bracket, earning a sudden victory win over Ottawa's Steven Elwell followed by a 13-5 major decision against Rio Grande's Bruce Wagers. Rodriguez's run was halted later in the round with a sudden victory loss to No. 12 Jordan Sommers of Keiser.

Despite the setback, Rodriguez advanced to day three and will compete in the placement rounds.

Rodriguez is set to face No. 14 Ethan DeRoche of Providence in the seventh-place match. Earlier this season in dual competition, Rodriguez defeated DeRoche by a 7-4 decision.

By advancing to the final day's placement rounds, Rodriguez has secured NAIA All-American honors. Wrestling resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
