HELENA, Mont. – No. 13 Eastern Oregon extended its winning streak to 15 games with a dominant doubleheader sweep over the University of Providence, winning 11-2 and 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
The Mountaineers improved to 18-3 overall and 14-1 in CCC action with the pair of victories.
Game 1: Eastern Oregon 11, Providence 2
Eastern Oregon jumped ahead early, capitalizing on a Providence miscue to plate a run in the first inning. A passed ball with the bases loaded extended the lead before Madison Olson drove in a run on a fielder's choice, giving EOU a 3-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers continued their offensive momentum in the third inning as Haley Tyree and Katelyn Evans each recorded RBI singles to push the lead to 5-0. The Argos responded in the bottom half of the inning, with Tiffany Fuentes singling home Kasidy Yeoman and an error by the EOU shortstop allowing another run to score, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
EOU added to its lead in the fourth with a Kelly Monaghan RBI single before tacking on another run in the fifth on an overthrow. Madelyn Durham delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-2. In the seventh, Emily Barry capped the scoring with a two-run homer to left field, sealing the 11-2 victory.
Game 2: Eastern Oregon 5, Providence 4
Providence put up a strong fight in the second game, taking an early lead in the first inning when Brynn Cullen singled home Sydnee Weber. In the second, Yeoman launched a two-run homer to left field, giving the Argos a 3-0 advantage.
EOU chipped away at the lead in the sixth, as Hannah Tyree doubled home Haley Tyree to make it a 3-1 game. The Mountaineers rallied in the seventh, with Hope Burke delivering a clutch two-run homer to tie the game. EOU then took the lead on consecutive RBI singles from Hannah Tyree and Katelynn Evans, making it 5-3.
Providence threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Olivia Roe singled home Yeoman to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Eastern Oregon held on to secure the victory and complete the sweep.
Eastern Oregon will look to extend its winning streak next weekend when the Mounties travel to Caldwell to face College of Idaho.
