Wieber Advances to Semifinals on Day One of NAIA National Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - Eastern Oregon women's wrestling wrapped up the first day of the 3rd Annual NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships on Friday, with standout Liv Wieber leading the way by advancing to the semifinals in the 145-pound bracket.

Wieber, ranked No. 2 in her weight class, was dominant throughout the day, securing two victories by fall before winning her quarterfinal match by decision. She pinned Makayla Munoz of Oklahoma City in 2:35 in the opening round and followed with another fall over Doane's Bridgette Sotomayor in just 1:50. In the quarterfinals, Wieber defeated No. 7 Josselinne Campos of Lindsey Wilson with a decisive 5-0 decision. She will face No. 3 Esther Kolawole of William Penn in Saturday's semifinal with a spot in the national championship match on the line.

Other Mountaineers battled through the competition but were unable to advance past the consolation brackets. Nayeli Flores Roque (103 lbs.), Telsarina Walter (110 lbs.), and Kadence Beck (124 lbs.) were each eliminated from contention after tough matchups. Nia Avelino (110 lbs.) secured a victory in the consolation rounds, defeating Iby Garcia of Oklahoma City by decision (8-4), but fell in her next match. Irma Retano (117 lbs.) put up a strong performance, earning a tech fall victory over Larhae Whaley of Dickinson State (13-2) before being eliminated in the fourth consolation round.

Wieber's performance was the highlight of the day for Eastern Oregon, as she contributed 13.0 team points, giving the Mountaineers a presence in Saturday's semifinals. The Mountaineers currently sit in 22nd place with a total of 16 points.

Day two of the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships continues tomorrow at Hartman Arena, with Wieber looking to punch her ticket to the national title match.
