Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Tally Connors, EOU SID GA

Eastern Oregon Falls to Bushnell

EUGENE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon men's basketball came up short on the road Saturday night, falling 81-73 to Bushnell at the Morse Center.

The Mountaineers battled throughout the contest but were unable to overcome the Beacons' efficiency from the field, as Bushnell shot 45.2% overall compared to EOU's 36.2%.

Garrett Hawkes led the Mounties with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Brennen Newsom provided a strong presence inside, scoring 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting while grabbing five rebounds. Malachi Afework and Trent Rogers each knocked down a pair of three-pointers, contributing 10 and eight points.

Bushnell was led by a balanced attack, with Cory Johnson and Kaleb Burnett each scoring 14 points. Johnson also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to complete a double-double. Squeeky Johnson added 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers in the first half to help the Beacons take a 37-33 lead at the break.

EOU remained within striking distance throughout the second half, closing the gap to two points early in the period after back-to-back baskets from Afework. However, Bushnell responded with a 7-0 run and maintained control the rest of the way. Free throws down the stretch helped seal the victory for the Beacons, who finished 20-of-26 from the line.

Eastern Oregon outrebounded Bushnell 43-42 and shot an impressive 89.5% from the free-throw line, but the Mounties struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 6-of-22 attempts (27.3%).

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back next week when they return home Friday February 7th to face Walla Walla University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.
