GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon University men's wrestling team came up short against No. 13 University of Providence, falling 27–18 on Saturday afternoon.
The Mounties faced an early challenge as Providence claimed victories in the opening three bouts.
Kylan Guerra dropped a 9–1 decision to Brady Ellison, while
Gabe Vasa battled deep into his match before being pinned by Noah Poe-Hatten at the 6:59 mark. At 149 pounds, No. 20
Eric Karas squared off against No. 8 Brendan Lockart but was unable to gain momentum, resulting in a loss that gave the Argos a 16–0 advantage.
Eastern Oregon responded over the next four matches to swing the momentum. No. 8
Nico Rodriguez earned a hard-fought 7–4 victory over No. 11 Ethan DeRoche, setting the tone for the comeback.
Jackson Eylar followed with an offensive showcase, outscoring Boden Banta 18–14.
Kai Carson continued the surge by pinning Na'u McBrayer in just 2:30, and
Braden Carson capped the run with a pin of Hunter Dyer at 4:14.
The four consecutive wins propelled the Mounties into an 18–16 lead, but Providence regained control late in the dual. No. 25
Cole Cross suffered a 12–2 loss to Tristian Bremer, shifting the advantage back to the Argos.
Carlos Valdez provided a spark against top-ranked Hunter Hobbs, nearly pulling off the upset after putting Hobbs on his back late in the match, but ultimately fell 12–8. The dual concluded with
John Rudebaugh dropping a 10–2 decision to No. 22 Blaze Sumiye, sealing the 27–18 victory for Providence.
Eastern Oregon will look to close out the calendar year on a strong note as the Mounties return to action on Sunday, December 14, traveling to face RV Montana State Northern. The duals are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. MT in Havre, Montana.
