Five Mountaineers Place in Season Opener at Menlo Open

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon University Women's Wrestling team kicked off its 2025-2026 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Menlo Women's Open, taking on a talented field of competitors from across the country. Five Mountaineers battled through deep brackets to earn Top-5 finishes in their first action of the season.

Gloria Diaz (117lbs) placed 5th to start her season on the podium. After an opening bye, Diaz recorded back-to-back pins in 2:51 and 2:49. Despite dropping her next two bouts, she rebounded in the consolation finals with a clutch fall over Missouri Valley's Ashtyn Sagely to claim fifth place.

Telsarina Walter (110 lbs) turned in an impressive effort, finishing 4th. Following a first-round bye, Walter dominated her next two opponents with 10-0 technical falls in 2:09 and 5:54. After a setback in the semifinals, she bounced back with a pin in 2:11 to reach the third-place match. Walter battled hard but came up just short, dropping a 6-2 decision to finish fourth.

At 131 lbs, Lexi Garza also earned a 4th-place finish. Garza opened with a bye and a 4-1 decision before suffering her first loss. She then surged through the consolation rounds with three straight pins in 0:51, 3:26, and 4:37, securing a spot in the bronze-medal match. Garza ultimately fell to unattached Brianna Ross (fall, 2:18) to place fourth..

Veil Foreman (145 lbs) showed grit throughout the day, battling back to take 5th place. After an opening bye and a quick first-round loss, Foreman responded with four consecutive victories—earning a 6-5 decision and pins in 1:07, 0:36, and 1:59—to advance deep into the bracket. She dropped a 7-2 decision to Menlo's Alana Ontiveros but finished strong, defeating Southern Oregon's Holland Wieber 6-0 in the fifth-place match.
Closing out the Mountaineer placers, Kiona Michel (207 lbs) grabbed 4th place. Michel started her day with a fall in 5:58, then bounced back from a second-round loss with three straight victories—a 5-0 decision, a pin in 1:24, and an 11-0 technical fall in 3:00. In the third-place bout, Michel fell in a 10-2 decision to finish her opening tournament with a solid fourth-place showing.
The Mountaineers will return to action next Saturday, November 8th, at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove, Oregon, as they continue their early-season campaign.
