SALEM, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University women's wrestling showcased its depth with 10 placewinners at the Mat Cat Open on Sunday, highlighted by two individual champions. The Mountaineers tallied strong performances across weight classes, including two runners-up and several top-five finishes.
Top Performances
- Irma Retano (117 lbs.) claimed the title in her bracket, going undefeated on the day. Retano secured victories by decision, technical fall, and capped her championship run with an 11-0 technical fall win in the final over Vaea LaMoureaux (Umpqua CC).
- Brooke Cicierski (131 lbs.) emerged as another champion for the Mountaineers, defeating teammate Kirsten Delazerda by fall in the first-place match after two earlier decision victories.
- Kirsten Delazerda (131 lbs.) also had a standout day, finishing second in her bracket. Delazerda earned two falls and a technical fall en route to the championship bout.
- Nia Avelino (110 lbs.) earned a runner-up finish with a 3-1 record. Avelino advanced to the finals with two technical falls and a pin before falling to Nizhoni Tallman (Evergreen State).
- Telsarina Walter (110 lbs.) battled back to take third place, recording three pins in the consolation bracket, including a third-place match victory over Alyson Ortiz (Umpqua CC).
- Brooklyn Jones (124 lbs.) finished second after winning her first two matches, including a technical fall, before falling in the championship round.
- Anna Rodriguez (131 lbs.) and Taylor Schaffner (131 lbs.) placed fifth and sixth.
- Jocelyn Velasco (160 lbs.) earned a fourth-place finish, highlighted by a decisive pin in the consolation semifinals.
- Laura Meyers (180 lbs.) rounded out the Mountaineers' placewinners with a fourth-place effort, including a 13-2 technical fall victory and a pin in the latter rounds.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend on January 17th when they face Evergreen State in Olympia, Wash.
