OLYMPIA, Wash. – No. 17 nationally ranked Darrian Hoobery led the way for Eastern Oregon University men's wrestling on Sunday, capturing the 285-pound title at the Evergreen Open in Olympia, Wash. The Mountaineers showcased strong performances throughout the tournament, with three athletes earning top finishes.
Hoobery dominated the heavyweight division, tallying a perfect record en route to the championship. He opened the tournament with a technical fall victory over Julian Ortiz (Linfield) before securing back-to-back pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the first-place match, Hoobery delivered a commanding 14-3 major decision over Garrett Olbrich (Pacific University) to claim the title.
At 197 pounds, Justin Sawai put together an impressive run to secure a second-place finish. Sawai advanced to the finals with key victories, including a decisive 8-3 win in the semifinals over David Darroch (Washington State University). In the championship bout, Sawai fell just short, dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to Alex Grant (Washington State University).
Kylan Guerra rounded out the top finishes for EOU, placing fourth in the 174-pound bracket. Guerra amassed five wins on the day, including three pins and a 15-0 technical fall over Justin Pritchard (Evergreen State College).
