ASHLAND, Ore. – Kaydence Martinez's 20-yard strike in the 79th minute broke a scoreless tie and gave Eastern Oregon a 1-0 victory over Southern Oregon on Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium. The win pushed the Mountaineers to 3-3-2 overall and 2-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, while the Raiders dropped to 6-3-0 and 3-2-0 in the CCC.
Martinez went one-on-one with her defender before firing a perfectly placed shot under the crossbar, sealing the game for EOU. The assist came from Ashley Smith, whose setup allowed the Mountaineers to break through a strong Southern Oregon defense that withstood seven Mountaineer shot attempts in the first half.
Eastern Oregon controlled much of the game, outshooting the Raiders 16-11 and placing seven shots on target. Goalkeeper Madeline Barker made four saves to earn a clean sheet, while SOU's Ashlynn Hernandez recorded six saves but couldn't stop the late breakthrough.
Southern Oregon had its chances, including a near-goal with a header off the crossbar early in the second half, but the Mounties' defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
