Mountaineers Send Seniors Out on High Note with 72-62 Win Over Eagles

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Mountaineer Women's Basketball wrapped up home action for the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 72-62 win over Northwest University inside Quinn Coliseum. The win not only improved Eastern Oregon's home record to 10-1, but it also sent seniors Brandy Smith and Taylor Stricklin out on a high note with the Senior Day victory.

How it Happened
• Playing a big role in the win for the Mountaineers (19-9, 16-4 CCC) was their bench play. The Eastern reserves outscored the Northwest reserves, 27-11.
• Defensively, the Mounties held the Eagles (15-12, 9-11 CCC) to a 40.6 field goal percentage overall and shot 44.1% on the flip side.
• Rebounding was close by comparison with EOU having the edge at 40-38. Also helping was EOU's perimeter defense that held NU to 2-12 from deep for 16.7%. Eastern finished 8-21 for 38.1%.
• The opening quarter was a close one with EOU barely out-scoring NU, 19-17. Neither team led by more than four points, but two fastbreak layups by EOU gave the team a two-point edge.
• The second quarter saw the Mounties score 22 points, while their defense held the Eagles to just 13. The Mounties' efforts gave them a 41-30 lead at the break.
• A 7-2 run by Eastern to start the second gave them a 26-21 lead with 7:14 to go in the half. NU got within three on a made layup, 26-23, but never got any closer the rest of the frame.
• In the final two minutes of the second, the Mounties managed to push their lead to double digits. A jumper from Ami Tia put the lead at 10, 37-27, in the final minute before they went into halftime leading by 11.
• The third quarter was where the Eagles were able to mount a comeback effort as they held the Mounties to just nine points and scored 14. The low scoring quarter made it a 50-44 game going into the fourth.
• EOU maintained a double-digit lead for much of the third quarter, before a late rally by NU made things interesting. EOU was up 13, 50-37, in the final three minutes but a 7-0 surge by NU cut the lead to just six.
• Despite their best efforts, the Eagles' rally to close the third did not transition into the fourth. EOU started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to surge ahead by double digits, 57-44.
• The Mountaineers fast start in the fourth was too much for NU to overcome. EOU ultimately outscored the Eagles 22-18 and secured the 10-point home finale win.
