Sharp Shooting and Strong Rebounding Leads Mounties to Win Over SOU

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon took down the Raiders of Southern Oregon University for their second straight CCC win to open conference play. The Mountaineers relied on consistent shooting and a strong presence inside to carry them to a 67-54 victory over the Raiders. The win pushes EOU to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss the Raiders drop to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Southern Oregon came out on the attack starting the game with a Danasia Allison three to take the lead. The Raiders held onto the lead all the way through the first quarter finishing up three, 13-10.

Eastern evened it up with their first shot of the second quarter thanks to a Brie Holecek three but wouldn't take the lead until midway through the quarter as Holecek struck again to give the Mounties their first lead of the day. From there the Mounties held on to a lead and went up by five with a minute left in the half after Beverly Slater got out in transition putting two on the board. A Brianna Phiakhamngon jumper brought the Raiders back within three with half a minute to go wrapping up scoring in the half.

Eastern kept its foot on the gas in the third and fourth quarters outscoring Southern in both. The Mountaineers locked down the Raider attack holding them to 31 percent shooting and not allowing a made three in the second half. A big 12-2 run to start the second half got things going for Eastern. The Raiders did their best to narrow the gap closing out the third quarter on a 5-0 run to bring them within single digits again making it 49-40.

The fourth quarter saw Eastern's hot shooting continue as the Mounties took their biggest lead of the game on a Haley Robinett three to go up 17 with a minute left. Southern bit into the lead with a few free throws but it was too little, too late as the Mounties took the win 67-54.

EOU will continue CCC play this coming Friday when they take on College of Idaho for their third-straight home game. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Quinn Coliseum.
