Mountaineers Fall to Knights in CCC Opener

PORTLAND - Mountaineer Men's Soccer suffered a tough loss Friday evening on the road as they fell to Warner Pacific University, 1-0, to start conference play. With the loss, Eastern Oregon University falls to 0-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 to start Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

How it Happened
• Helping The Knights (4-1-0, 1-0-0 CCC) in the win was a 13-5 advantage in total shots, but barely held a 3-2 shots on goal edge. Both teams' defenses tallied two saves and corner kicks, respectively, in the match.
• The first period was a clean one as the two squads did not let up a goal to keep the match at a scoreless bout by halftime. The Knights had a chance to score early on with a penalty kick attempt in the 13th minute, but the shot sailed wide.
• In the first 45 minutes of action, the Knights defense managed to keep the Mountaineers offense at bay with just one shot being surrendered. On the flip side, WPU tallied seven shots but none came on goal.
• Going into the second period, the Knights ended the scoreless battle in the first 10 minutes of play. In the 54th minute, WPU got the ball on the inside right end of the penalty area and a quick tap and shoot helped the ball find the back of the net.
• The shoot and score for the Knights was quick and it was just enough for them to secure the home win. EOU managed four shots in the second frame, but had just one on goal, while WPU finished with six more shots and had three on goal.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
• In net, Noah Galow had two saves in 90 minutes of action.
• Offensively, Hector Galeana had two shots off the bench with one coming on goal to lead EOU.
• In his first match of the year, Jonas Drees had one shot that came on goal.

For the Knights
• Mauricio Sanchez scored the gamewinning goal for WPU for the win and had one shot taken.
• Arturo Bahena was credited the assist in the win and was second in shots taken with three.
• Nick Evans took the most shots in the match with four.
• Goalkeeper Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado tallied two saves for the shutout win.
