Corban Sweeps Day Two Over Eastern to Take Series

HERMISTON, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University Baseball wrapped up its four-game series Sunday afternoon against Corban University. The Warriors managed to secure the series win with a 3-1 victory in game one and a 13-9 victory in game two. With the losses, EOU falls to 3-9 overall and is 3-5 in CCC play.

Game 1 – Corban 3, Eastern Oregon 1
How it Happened
• The first contest of the day and third of the series was the lowest scoring with the Warriors (7-17, 6-6 CCC) picking up the win 3-1. For the game, both squads put up five hits in the contest and had a combined five errors with Corban having three and EOU having one two.
• The contest was knotted at a scoreless tie through the first three innings. Corban had two of its five hits come in the opening frame but was held without a hit in the next two innings. On the flip side, EOU had just one hit in the first three innings as both starting pitchers had solid starts.
• Fast forward to the fourth, the Warriors ended the scoreless outing in the frame to go up 1-0. A one-out walk got a runner on and he was able to get over to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch, respectively. The runner scored when a fielding error in left field on a fly out led to the unearned run.
• The Mountaineers responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but it was their only run of the contest. Brooks Dyer got on with a leadoff error by second. He advanced to second after Trevor Curl was walked and a Kagen Kennedy double down the left field line scored him to tie the contest at 1-all.
• Defense picked up yet again for both teams as the game was locked at 1-1 tie until the top of the seventh. The Warriors tacked on their final two runs with the help of two hits and the second EOU error of the day. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly scored both runs and secured the 3-1 win for Corban.
• Eastern looked to respond in the final three innings, but the Warriors pitching held the Mountaineer's bats to just one hit in that span as they held on for the two-run lead and went up 2-1 going into the series finale.

Game 2 – Corban 13, Eastern Oregon 9
How it Happened

• For the Mountaineers, both of their errors came in the opening frame. A two-out single got a runner on for Corban. Following a stolen base to second, back-to-back errors allowed the unearned run to come in and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead early.
• The Warriors worked a 1-2-3 outing to close the first but EOU responded doing the same to start the second. Two runners got on for the Mounties in the home half of the second, but both were left stranded to keep Corban in front 1-0 after two.
• The lead grew to 2-0 in the top of the third for Corban. A leadoff walk got a runner on and he advanced to second on a balk. A sacrifice bunt got the runner to third before a single down the left field line plated home the run.
• The score remained at 2-0 until the fifth when the Warriors added three more runs to the board to go ahead 5-0. A two-out rally fueled the inning for Corban who totaled four hits in the frame. A triple to right field scored the first run and the inning was capped off by a two-run homer to left field.
• Things turned around for the Mountaineers in the fifth who exploded for six unanswered runs to not only get back in the game, but also grab their first lead of the day. A bases-loaded walk scored the first run as Adrian Roa scored to make it 5-1. The Warriors then walked another batter to score Blake Loftus and bring it to 5-2.
• Both runs scored for EOU came after Corban managed to get two outs. The rally for EOU continued when Elliott Marks hit a bases clearing double to left field. His three RBI hit was crucial as it tied the game up at 5-all. Garrett Beckman gave EOU the lead, 6-5, when he plated home pinch runner Jonathan Gonzalez on a single to center.
• Corban responded in the top of the sixth with another two-run home run. The Mountaineers managed to get back-to-back outs to start the frame, before a single up the middle and a homer to left field scored the two runs to give the Warriors the 7-6 lead.
• Eastern tied the game back up in the bottom half of the sixth as an error by Corban on the leadoff at bat got the scoring run on base. Blake Loftus reached first on the error and immediately stole second. Kagen Kennedy advanced Loftus on a ground out before Trevor Curl had an RBI groundout to tie the contest at 7-all.
• Two runs from Corban in the top of the seventh push the Warriors back in front by two. A single through the left side was good for two RBI as the Warriors went up 9-7. Both runs for the Warriors once again came on a two-out rally.
• Eastern looked to respond in the bottom of the seventh but Corban worked a 1-2-3 frame to stay in front by two. The Mountaineers managed to keep the game at 9-7 as they did not allow a hit in the top of the eighth. EOU then scored two runs to tie the game at 9-all.
• The first of the Mounties' two runs in the eighth came when Kennedy plated home Easton Watterson on an RBI groundout to first base. Watterson was able to score after getting on base on a leadoff hit by pitch. Curl then singled to center field to score Loftus and tie the game at 9-9.
• The Warriors brought the final score to 13-9 as they scored four runs in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
