Mountaineers Sweep Lions in Season Opening Doubleheader

CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University Volleyball showcased why they were the No. 9 team in the nation Friday afternoon with a pair of dominant 3-0 match wins over Multnomah University. With the season opening wins, the Mountaineers begin the spring campaign 2-0.
 
Match 1 – Eastern Oregon 3, Multnomah 0 (25-3, 25-12, 25-14)
How it Happened
• Eastern Oregon dominated the majority of the match and it showed in the stat line. The Mounties hit .405 in three sets and held Multnomah (0-2) to a negative hitting percentage at -.085. Scoring runs of 12-0 and 11-0 ultimately proved to be too much for the Lions.
• The Mountaineers totaled 38 kills for the match and held the Lions to just 14 en route to the sweep. Also helping the Mounties was a 9-3 edge in service aces and a 12-2 advantage in blocks.
• The first set was dominant opener for EOU who routed MU by a final of 25-3. The Lions got up 1-0 to start before the Mountaineers went on a 12-0 run. In that span Cambree Scott led the charge with four kills and a pair of blocks as the Lions had no answer.
• The Lions ended the first run with a point out of the timeout to make it a 12-2 game. EOU then scored 11-straight to lead 23-2. Jet Taylor and Madison Morgan paced the way in the second run with three kills apiece.
• MU managed to muster out just one more point in the set before kills from Sade Williams and Preslee Jensen put the first set away by a final of 25-3.
• Set No. 2 had a similar start for EOU, who jumped out to as commanding 12-3 lead. MU battled back in the second set and managed to get within four, 14-10, midway through. The surge was short lived though as EOU closed out the frame with a 11-2 run.
• Breanna Schaffer and Scott were consistent presences in the set to power EOU to a 2-0 overall lead. Shaffer totaled three kills and a quartet of blocks. Scott complimented Shaffer at the net with five blocks and tacked on four kills.
• The third set saw MU battle bit harder in the beginning as the Lions managed to hold a 5-5 tie early on after trailing 3-0 to start. They managed to lead 10-9 at one point but had the lead again in the set. The Mountaineers went on to outscore the Lions 16-4 and walked away with the 25-14 win.
 
Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Cambree Scott led the front line on offense and defense as she racked up nine kills and had 10 blocks for the near double-double performance.
Breanna Shaffer had six kills for the match and assisted on five blocks in the win.
Jet Taylor also tallied sit kills and hit .455 for the match. She also added two blocks on defense.
Madison Pilon put up 21 assists in the match, while Alexis McMurtrey had 11.
Kiley McMurtrey led the back row defense with 14 kills and had a match-best three service aces.
Aspen Christiansen also tied the match-high in service aces with three and tallied seven digs.
 
For the Lions
• Kamaile Labanon led the MU offense with five kills and had one solo block.
• Rachel Bailey finished with 13 assists and one service ace.
• Danae Stokes and Jocelyn Porter each tallied three kills for the match.
• Alyssa Mehalovich led the defense with seven digs and had a service ace.
 
Match 2 – Eastern Oregon 3, Multnomah 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-12)
How it Happened
• Match No. 2 of the doubleheader featured a bit more excitement as the Lions battled close in the first two sets, before EOU ran away in set No. 3 to secure the 3-0 sweep.
• MU held a late lead in the second set, 21-17, before an 8-0 run by the Mountaineers sealed a come-from-behind wind and knocked down any momentum the Lions had left.
• EOU still hit over. 300 at a .316 mark and held the Lions to just .106 for the night cap. Double figure kills in each set helped EOU fend off the Lions, along with a 9-6 edge in service aces.
• The Mounties got down 4-1 early in the opening set before knotting the score at an even 6-6. Mariah Moulton had two kills while Madison Morgan tallied one to help get the EOU offense going early on.
Jet Taylor gave EOU its first lead at 7-6 on a kill and Preslee Jensen extended it to 8-6 with a kill of her own. After going up two, the Mountaineers never relinquished the lead for the rest of the set.
• MU kept things close throughput and stayed with 1-3 points the whole set but never got over the hump to get back ion front. Despite the back-and-forth affair, EOU stayed in the driver seat and led by as much as five over the Lions before winning the set 25-19.
• Taylor found her grove in the second set as she racked up four kills and a block to help. She had help on the front line as Moulton was right behind her with three kills.
• Set No. 2 was the toughest one of the day for the Mountaineers. They jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage, but the Lions clawed their way back into the game and managed to tie the game at 12-all.
• MU managed to go up 14-12 after trailing 12-9. EOU managed to keep things close and tied the set a few times but struggled get back in front until late.
• Following a timeout, EOU was back on the floor trailing 19-17 and back-to-back kills by MU made it a 21-17 edge. Despite the deficit, EOU was unphased and scored eight unanswered to secure the comeback win, 25-21.
• A key component in the 8-0 run for Eastern was the serving of Kiley McMurtrey who had four service aces which fueled the Mounties offense. Kills by Jensen, Shaffer, and Scott helped the offense while MU provided help with an attack error.
• Despite the collapse, MU came out fighting in the third set, but the experience of the Mounties and was too much in the third set. The Lions managed to lead early before EOU tied the set at 8-8 and took command from then on.
• A kill from Shaffer tied the set at 8-all and from that point EOU outscored the Lions 17-4 as they ultimately cruised to a 25-12 set win and closed out the match 3-0 overall.
• Six kills from Shaffer, along with five from Williams and three from Ashton Haughton in the third set helped push the Mountaineers to the set win and a day one sweep of the Lions.
 
Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Cambree Scott and Sade Williams each finished with a match-high nine kills to lead the EOU offense.
Breanna Shaffer had eight kills, while Jet Taylor finished with five and a pair of blocks.
Madison Pilon had 21 assists for the match, while Alexis McMurtrey chipped in 14.
Kiley McMurtrey and Aspen Christiansen each had double-digit digs with 18 and 10, respectively. McMurtrey also had a match-high four service aces
 
For the Lions
• Kamaile Labanon led the MU offense again, this time with six kills.
• Rachel Bailey tallied a match-high 24 assists and had one service ace.
• Alyssa Mehalovich had 11 digs to lead the Lions defense.
 
By the Numbers
295 – With the 2-0 sweep over MU, Head Coach Kaki McLean Morehead now has 295 career wins.
83 – EOU racked up 83 kills in the doubleheader win and held MU to just 38.
76 – Eastern had 76 assists in the two matches and limited the Lions to just 38.
15 – Between the two matches, the Mountaineers totaled 15 blocks.
18 – Eastern had 18 total service aces on the day, with nine in each match.
18 – Cambree Scott also had 18 kills on the day, split it at nine in each match win.
 
Up Next
• The Mountaineers are back in Caldwell tomorrow (Saturday) for another doubleheader series. This time EOU will face Oregon Tech. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. PT.
