No. 9 Mountaineers Close Out Weekend 4-0 with 3-1 Wins Over OIT

CALDWELL, Idaho – Ninth-ranked Eastern Oregon University Volleyball completed its perfect weekend with a pair 3-1 match victories Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers took down the Oregon Tech Owls to improve to 4-0.

Match 1 – Eastern Oregon 3, Oregon Tech 1 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16)
How it Happened
• The Mountaineers out-hit the Owls (5-2, 2-2 CCC) .302-.159 for the match and had a 58-48 advantage in kills. Helping EOU take the first match was also an 8-3 edge in services aces and 12 blocks compared to just seven by the Owls.
• Despite all the advantages by Eastern, OIT still made things tough in the match. The first set was a back-and-forth affair as EOU held on for a 25-20 win. The Mounties got up 3-1 early before a 4-1 run by OIT gave the Owls their first lead of the set at 5-4.
• From that point on both teams traded points as rallies were not a theme for much of the match. Neither squad managed to lead by more than one point until the midway point of the set. Tied at 14-all, EOU finally pieced together a 4-0 run to grab the largest lead of the set at the time. Preslee Jensen and Breanna Shaffer each got a kill, while Kiley McMurtrey had a service ace to help the run.
• Following a timeout by OIT, the Owls score four-straight to tie the set at 18-18. EOU was un-phased and held composure as the Mounties outscored OIT 7-2 to take the first set, 25-20. Helping EOU win the set was another 4-0 run in that span.
• Set No. 2 echoed the same theme as the Mounties and Owls traded points yet again for much of the first half of the frame. Eastern managed to take control at the 7-7 mark with a 7-0 run to go up 14-7. Madison Morgan helped fuel the run with two kills, while Scott and Shaffer each chipped in one.
• EOU's run was the difference maker as the Owls never managed to get any closer than five for the rest of the set. The Mountaineers went on to take the set 25-19 and pushed the match lead to 2-0.
• OIT responded in the third and won 25-22 to hand the Mounties their first set loss of the year. EOU nearly mounted a comeback late, but came up short. Like the first two sets, the two squads went back-and-forth for much of the set.
• The Mounties were able to bounce back and finish off the Owls in the fourth. It did not come easy as they two squads continued to battle close. EOU jumped up by four at 10-6 and 12-8, but each time, the Owls managed to get back into the set. Leading 15-11 over OIT, EOU then gave up four consecutive points and the set was tied at 15-all.
• Eastern called a timeout and responded after the short breather with a 5-0 run to go up 20-15. Jensen was the X-factor for EOU with three kills in the run to help give the Mountaineers a 20-15 edge. The Owls were unable to respond scoring just one more point and were outscored 10-1 overall in 25-16 loss.

Match 2 – Eastern Oregon 3, Oregon Tech (24-26, 27-25, 25-14, 25-19)
How it Happened
• The second match-up between the EOU and OIT did not disappoint yet again as the two teams continued a back-and-forth affair for much of the afternoon. EOU dropped the first set before rallying off wins in the next three sets to hand OIT its second loss of the season.
• EOU had its lowest hitting percentage of the young season at .264 in match No. 2, but held OIT to under .200 again at .153. The Mounties won the kills battle 66-50 and once again service aces were key as they held the edge, 6-3.
• EOU held the advantage in every major statistical category at 81-76 in digs, 64-50 in assists, and 8-7 in blocks.
• The first set needed extra points to determine a winner as OIT held off EOU for a 26-24 edge to win its only set of the match. Neither team led by more than two for much of the match. EOU managed to grab a 20-19 lead late, but never led again as OIT secured the win.
• The Mounties jumped out early in the second frame going up 5-2. Four kills and a service ace helped EOU grab the three-point lead, before OIT scored three unanswered to tie the set at 5-all. It then became a set of runs for the two squads.
• EOU scored three straight points to go up 8-5, before a 3-0 OIT run tied the set at 8-all. The Mountaineers responded with a 5-1 run and went back up 13-9. It seemed like EOU was set to pull away and open the match, but the Owls answered with a 5-1 run as well and tied the match at 14-14.
• The two squads went back to trading point the rest of the second set and forced a 25-all tie. Needing extra points to determine the winner, the Mounties made sure they came out on top to tie the match at 1-1. A kill from Sade Williams followed by a Kiley McMurtrey service ace shut the door on the set and got EOU back in the match.
• The third set was all Eastern Oregon as the Owls only managed 14 points, which was their lowest outing for the day. EOU jumped 9-3 early on thanks to a variety of kills from multiple players. OIT called a timeout but it made little difference as the Mounties managed to stay in front by 4-5 points.
• The closest the Owls got besides being tied at 2-2 early on was at the midway point of the set when they trailed 15-12 before EOU outscored OIT 10-2 to easily close out the set. The win gave EOU its first match lead at 2-1 after three set.
Breanna Shaffer and Madison Morgan were the go-to options for the Mountie sin the set win as the duo each racked up four kills to lead the offense. EOU held OIT to just nine kills in the set and a.000 hitting percentage, while hitting .387.
• OIT managed to regroup in the fourth set and kept things close with Eastern once again for much of the set. Eastern Managed to get up 12-9 to force an OIT timeout. The two teams were tied at 7-all before a 5-2 run by EOU forced the timeout call.
• Three kills by Shaffer along with two each from Sade Williams and Cambree Scott paced the Mountaineers early on. The Owls managed to fight back and got with 1-2 points multiple times but never managed to grab the lead.
• EOU continued its efficiency on offense and managed to push their lead to 21-16 before OIT burned its second timeout. Madison Pilon had options as she got kills for Jet Taylor, Preslee Jensen, Scott, and Williams in that span that allowed them to go up five.
• Following the timeout, the Owls managed to score just three more points as the Mounties closed out the match with the 25-19 in set No. 4.
