RENO, Nevada - Mountaineer Men's Wrestling wrapped up its final weekend of competition for the calendar year on Sunday competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Eastern Oregon had a limited squad in action with 10 grapplers competing.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers was
Luciano Fasulo at 125 pounds,
Monte Zufelt at 141 pounds, and
Kyle Knudtson at 184 pounds as the trio went 2-2 in their respective weight classes. As a team, EOU tallied 24.5 points and placed 19th overall in a field that featured teams at multiple collegiate levels.
Fasulo started the day pinning his opponent Elijah Griffen of Cal Baptist in 3:57 to advance in the championship bracket. The second win for Fasulo was in the next round as he scored a 3-0 decision over Aria Mazroy of San Francisco State. He then dropped his next two bouts by way of decision, respectively to finish the day with a .500 record.
Zufelt also had both of his wins on the day come in his first two match-ups. He began with a fall in 6:49 over Umpqua Community College. His second win was another pin, this time in 2:19, over Brady Hoshino of Cal Baptist. Zufelt then dropped a major decision and a decision to wrap up the day at 2-2.
Both of Knudtson's wins came by way of pin in his first two bouts. His opening round bout was a fall in 1:05 over Gabe Chesbro of St. Mary. He then pinned Brandon Bostwick of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in 4:35. Knudtson's two losses were a decision and tech fall.
Four grapplers went 1-2 for Eastern in
Malakai Moyer (157 lbs.),
John Bittinger (165 lbs.),
Keegan Mulhill (174 lbs.), and
Jay Smith (197 lbs.).
The Mountaineers will not be back on the mats until after the New Year. They will compete again on Jan. 7 and 8 in a pair of CCC duals. EOU is at Arizona Christian on Jan. 7 followed by Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Jan. 8.
