Mountaineers Rout Wolves on Senior Day

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Mountaineer Men's Soccer capped off Senior Weekend in style with a 6-0 shutout over Walla Walla University on Sunday afternoon. Eastern Oregon honored one senior ahead of the win in Santiago Peniche for his contributions to the program. With the victory, EOU improves to 6-8-0 overall and is 6-5-0 in CCC play.

How it Happened
• Mother nature was not kind in this contest as strong winds up to 45 miles per hour were felt at Community Stadium. Nonetheless, EOU did not disappoint the fans that braved the wind and scored a trio of goals in each period.
• Aggressive play on offense paced the Mountaineers to the six goal win as they racked up a season high 29 shots and had 13 come on goal.
• Defensively, Eastern held Walla Walla (1-11-1, 1-10-0 CCC) to just five shots in 90 minutes of play and only two were on goal.
• Goal No. 1of the afternoon came in the first 10 minutes of play. Kellen Burke scored from 10 yards out on an assist from Carlos Murillo in the ninth minute to make it a 1-0 game.
• The score remained at 1-0 until the 21st minute. Following a foul by the Wolves, Rudy Salinas-Solorio put a free kick from 45yards out into the penalty area where Ryan Brown played a quick touch on the ball for the goal.
• The 2-0 lead for Eastern grew to 3-0 in the 29th minute. Rui Tsubakihara lined up a corner kick from the bottom half of the field and nailed the upper right corner of the net just past the goalkeeper's reach on a well placed shot.
• Going into the halftime break, EOU totaled 14 shots and had five come on goal. The Mountaineers defense was stout, limiting the Wolves to just two in that same span.
• In the second frame, goals 4-6 for the Mountaineers all came in the first 20 minutes with the final two being within just one minute of each other.
• Murillo and Burke connected on the first two goals of the second period. This time it was Murillo who played a pass in stride from Burke and connected from three yards out on the right side for the goal in the 51st minute.
• Leading 4-0, Burke and Murillo teamed up again to put EOU up by five in the 56th minute. The goal was almost exactly the same as Burke took a pass in stride from Murillo, got deep in the penalty area and hit the lower left end of the net for his second goal of the game.
• One minute later, EOU tacked on its final goal of the match. Angel Rojas got into the far right end of the penalty area and played a quick pass back to the middle where Salinas-Solorio netted the goal to put EOU up 6-0 for good.
• High tempo again dictated the second period as the Mountaineers finished with 15 more shots in the frame and had eight come on goal. Defensively, they held Walla Walla to three shots and only one was on goal as they secured the shutout in the home finale.
