Softball Goes 0-2 at Pacific University

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon softball team finished off their opening weekend against NCAA DIII opponent Pacific University, losing the doubleheader 8-2 and 5-4 on Sunday.

Game 1 - Pacific 8, Eastern Oregon 2
In the first game, Pacific took the early lead in the first inning scoring one run as Nicole Martinez crossed the plate.

The next two innings were scoreless among both sides. The top of the fourth inning saw the Mountaineers score two runs to take a 2-1 lead over the Boxers. The first run came when Alaina Carson scored off an error. Amanda Smith scored the second run on a passed ball by Pacific. Despite taking the lead, the Boxers answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the fifth, making the score 8-2 in favor of the Red and Black as they would shutout EOU the rest of the way.

Senior Ashton Kazmierski opened the game and allowed just one run in three innings before being relieved by Abby Giles.

Game Two

The second game was a much closer contest and EOU led for the majority of the game until the bottom of the seventh when the Boxers stole the lead and the game 5-4 with a walk-off single.

Right fielder Brittney Bertrand opened up the scoring for the Mounties when she crossed home on Amanda Smith's RBI single, taking the lead in the first inning 1-0. The Boxers answered back with one run in the bottom of the first to level the score 1-1.

The second inning was the best of the day for EOU, scoring three runs. Bertrand's bunt allowed Payton Pocklington to score and gave the Mountaineers back the lead 2-1. Jordan Henley scored two runs with a triple, bringing Bertrand and Brianna Zweygardt home, increasing the lead to 4-1 in the top of the second.

Pacific earned back a run in the third, closing the gap to 4-2. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh where the Boxers began a comeback, scoring three runs in their final at bats, sending the Mounties home with a tough loss.

EOU used three pitchers in the game, as Zweygardt started and pitched for three innings while allowing two runs. Natalee Hall relieved her and gave up three runs. Bertrand went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and half of the team's hits in game two.

The Mountaineers will travel to California next weekend to face Simpson University and William Jessup in the Simpson Triangular beginning Saturday.
