Softball Drops First 2 of Simpson Triangular

REDDING, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in its first two games of the Simpson Triangular on Saturday, losing 8-6 in game one against Simpson and 12-4 in game two against William Jessup.

GAME 1 | Simpson 8, Eastern Oregon 6

The Mounties kept game one of the day close despite falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. EOU got runs in the second and third inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Red Hawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the third that extended their lead to 7-2.

EOU responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth that made it 7-5. Simpson scored one in the fifth, and the Mounties grabbed one more in the sixth, but would get no closer as they fell 8-6.

The Blue and Gold tallied nine hits in the game, led by two hits apiece by freshman outfielder Brittney Bertrand, junior first baseman Amanda Smith and junior third baseman Glori Cheevers. Bertrand scored two runs while freshman shortstop Taylor Dow had two runs batted in. Sophomore Brianna Zweygardt allowed just one run in three innings in relief.

GAME 2 | William Jessup 12, Eastern Oregon 4 (F/5)

The Blue and Gold got out to the early lead against William Jessup, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Smith hit her first home run of the year, a three-run shot, to score Shelby Starr and Kaylin Winans. Senior Payton Pocklington added an RBI single to make it 4-0.

From there, however, it was all Warriors as they would score three runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second, one in the third and four more in the fourth to force the run rule and defeat the Mounties in five innings.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Sunday with games at 8 a.m., 12 and 2 p.m. as the Simpson Triangular continues.
