Mounties Hold Off Wolves’ Late Comeback in 86-80 Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team survived a late comeback attempt by Walla Walla on Saturday night, winning 86-80 on the road in Cascade Conference play.

The Mountaineers (12-12, 6-9 CCC) led by as many as 20 points with 7:37 to play in the second half, but watched their lead dwindle over the next seven minutes, with the Wolves pulling to within just three points at 80-77 with 36 seconds remaining.

However, EOU had a standout night from junior guard Max McCullough, who stepped up to the free throw line on the Mounties' next two possessions, sinking all four free throws and Walla Walla's hopes at a late comeback. McCullough finished with a game-high 27 points, shooting 13-for-14 from the free throw line. Jarek Schetzle added 17 points and six rebounds.

KiAndre Gaddy had 26 points, Zayne Browning 22 and Dylan Browning 21 for Walla Walla.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mounties made 13 three pointers on the night, making 52 percent of their shots from behind the arc. Overall, they also shot 82.6 percent from the free throw line to help hold off the Wolves.

The Blue and Gold took their first lead of the game with 6:33 to go as Johnson hit a three to make it 26-25. The Mounties ended the half with a 39-29 lead after a three by Kobi Gardea just before the half.

The Mountaineers continued their hot run into the second half as they took a 20-point lead, before the Wolves' furious comeback that came up short.
