Softball Goes 0-2 at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team began the 2020 season on the road at NCAA Division II Western Oregon, falling in a doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 5-1 on Saturday.

In game one, the Mountaineers fell behind early, with the Wolves scoring four runs in the first, one run in the second, followed by three in the third and one more in the fourth. This would be all WOU would need to enact the eight-run rule after five innings, as the Mounties mustered one hit against Wolf pitcher Maddie Mayer.

EOU's one hit came from junior Amanda Smith, who went 1-for-2 at the dish. Alaina Carson and Taylor Dow each drew walks.

The Blue and Gold got their first run of the season in game two as Carson came through with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning to bring home senior Jordan Henley. This cut WOU's lead to 3-1 at the time, but the Wolves added two runs in the sixth to win 5-1.

EOU also had hits from sophomore Shelby Starr, Mandy Fetters, Henley and Brittney Bertrand in game two.

Senior Ashton Kazmierski made the start in game one, allowing eight runs in three innings. Kaylin Winans pitched one inning in relief, allowing one run. Game two saw three pitchers as Smith pitched three innings with two earned runs allowed. Abby Giles threw two scoreless innings and Brianna Zwegardt allowed two runs in one inning.

The Mountaineers continue their first weekend of action on Sunday at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.
