Mountaineers Fall at No. 1 Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team was swept in the series opening doubleheader at No. 1 Southern Oregon, 9-1 and 12-0 on Friday on the road in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

GAME 1 |Southern Oregon 9, Eastern Oregon 1 (F/6)

The Mountaineers (3-13, 2-3 CCC) kept the game close early with the defending national champion Raiders in the series opener. After SOU scored two runs in the bottom of the first, EOU answered with a run of their own in the top of the second to make it 2-1. Sophomore Haley Ebner started the inning with a single, moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on an Amanda Smith single. With one out, freshman Taylor Dow brought Ebner home with a sacrifice fly.

The Mounties got no closer, however, as the Raiders tacked on three runs in the third and two in the fourth to make it 7-1. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Southern walked off by run-rule with two runs to make it 9-1 after six innings.

Senior Ashton Kazmierski made the start, allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings. Natalee Hall came in relief, giving up one run in 1.2 innings.

GAME 2 | Southern Oregon 12, Eastern Oregon 0 (F/5)

The second game was tougher for EOU as the Raiders tallied six runs in each of the first two innings. The Mounties were never able to climb out of the early hole, as they were run-ruled after five innings.

Sophomore Brianna Zweygardt pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball in relief as the Raiders were held scoreless after the second inning.

Ebner and senior Jordan Henley each tallied two hits in the pair of games.

The Mountaineers finish the doubleheader on Saturday with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
