EOU Softball Drops Final 2 Games of Series at No. 1 SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in the final two games of the Cascade Collegiate Conference series at No. 1 ranked Southern Oregon, 12-4 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1 |Southern Oregon 12, Eastern Oregon 4 (F/5)

The Mountaineers' (3-15, 2-4 CCC) best opportunity to win a game in the series against the defending national champions came in the first on Saturday. Facing NAIA All-American pitcher Gabby Sandoval, the Mountaineers scored one run in the first inning and two more in the top of the third to lead 3-2. Sophomore Haley Ebner had two RBI singles, each scoring freshman Alaina Carson. Freshman Taylor Dow brought home the other run in the third, sending a single down the right field line to score senior Jordan Henley.

The Raiders answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to take a 4-3 lead. EOU responded in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout by Henley to bring home Carson for her third run of the game, knotting the score at 4-4.

However, Southern showed its No. 1 ranking in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs that enforced the five-inning run rule, ending the game on a walk-off double to make it 12-4.

Junior Amanda Smith made the start as she pitched effectively through four innings before a tough start to the fifth. Smith allowed seven runs with just three earned over 4.1 innings with two strikeouts.

Carson went 2-for-2 on the day with two runs scored, a double and a walk. Ebner was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Dow went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Smith tallied the team's other hit.
