Wrestling Goes 3-0, Earns Top-20 Win in Portland

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 18 Eastern Oregon wrestling team enjoyed a perfect day in duals with a 3-0 record overall, including a top-20 victory over No. 12 Embry-Riddle on Saturday.

The Mountaineers battled in three-straight duals at Warner Pacific and made the most of their opportunities. EOU started the day with their biggest dual of the day against CCC rival and No. 12-ranked Embry Riddle.

In the first dual, the Mountaineers (11-3) got a forfeit to start to give them a 6-0 lead. After a loss by fall, senior Blake McNall won by a close 1-0 decision to make the score 9-6. The Mounties lost by fall again, but John Bittinger won by a 15-10 score at 157 pounds to tie the dual 9-9 through the halfway point.

After a 6-1 loss at 165 pounds, sophomore Keegan Mulhill reclaimed the lead 15-12 with a pin in the first round at 174 pounds. Another loss tied the score at 15, but EOU won the final two matches with a wild overtime win by Ryan Redford and a 10-0 major decision by Noel Orozco in the heavyweight bout.

EOU used the top-20 win to keep the momentum running through the rest of the day. The Mounties got six forfeits out of 10 matches that gave them an immediate 36-0 lead and the dual victory. For good measure, the Mountaineers won their other four matches including pins by Nathaniel Rodriguez and Marco Retano, and two technical falls by Bittinger and Josh Pine to crush the Boxers 58-0.

The Mountaineers finished their final dual of the day with a 34-20 win over CCC rival Warner Pacific. EOU fell behind 20-0 to start the dual due to a forfeit, fall and two major decision losses. However, it was all Mountaineers from there on out with wins in the final six matches. Bittinger, Retano and Redford each won by forfeit. Pine and Mulhill each came away with back-to-back pins and Cade Woodward finished the dual with a major decision win.

EOU will next be at home on Friday, Jan. 31 against Clackamas CC at 6 p.m. The Mounties will also host three home duals on Saturday and the first Mountaineer Open on Sunday.
