Fielder’s Last Second Layup Lifts EOU Over Yotes 63-61

CALDWELL, Idaho. – Senior Rachel Fielder's layup with less than one second remaining sent the Eastern Oregon women's basketball team to a 63-61 road victory over rival College of Idaho on Wednesday night in the first matchup of the annual War on 84 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Tied 61-61 with four seconds remaining, the Mountaineers (12-7, 6-3 CCC) set up a great play in which senior Jane Nelson inbounded the ball to junior guard Megan Still, who followed up with a great bounce pass past two defenders to Fielder who made no mistake on the wide-open layup to give EOU the lead with 0.8 seconds remaining. The Yotes game-tying attempt was then defended excellently by Fielder as the Mountaineers earned the big road win.

Statistically, the game was an odd one for both teams. EOU earned the victory despite a season-high 26 turnovers. The Yotes also finished with 18 offensive rebounds and had a 73-49 advantage in field goal attempts, but made just 27 percent of their shots. On the other side, the Mounties made 47 percent overall and shot 9-for-19 from behind the arc as they made the most of their opportunities despite the turnovers.

Fielder had a big night for EOU, finishing with a double-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Senior Emma Logan also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, adding five assists. Nelson finished with nine points and senior Whitney Meier scored eight off the bench.

EOU's strong defense in forcing tough shots by the College of Idaho led the day for Eastern. No single Yote reached double-digit scoring with six different players scoring eight points each.

With the victory, the Mounties extend their winning streak to three games, all coming on the road. They will enjoy the weekend off before returning for games in La Grande against Oregon Tech on Jan. 24 and Southern Oregon on Jan. 25.
