Monica Plut Named EOU’s 1st-Ever Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon Director of Athletics Anji Weissenfluh announced the hiring of Monica Plut as the department's first-ever head women's lacrosse coach on Tuesday morning.

Plut joins the Mountaineers after leading the women's lacrosse program at Adams State University, a NCAA Division II school in Alamosa, Colorado, for one season.

"I would like to welcome Monica Plut to Eastern Oregon University as our first women's lacrosse coach," said Weissenfluh. "Monica brings an unparalleled passion for the sport and she is dedicated to building a program and bringing positive exposure to women's lacrosse. Her strength in recruiting will be imperative in bringing quality student-athletes to Eastern."

Plut started her coaching career in 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. She then moved to Lexington and became the head coach for the Woodford County Yellow Jackets in 2016. Her team was the state runner-up in the 2017 season. The next year, Plut became the head coach at Sayre School, a private school in Lexington. She led her team to the league semifinals and was ranked No. 1 in the East District.

"I am extremely excited for the opportunity to start a lacrosse program from scratch at Eastern Oregon!" said Plut. "With the sport of lacrosse growing on the west coast and at the collegiate level, it is exciting to be a part of that growth by bringing it to EOU and the valley."

At Adams State, Plut also taught lacrosse to middle school and high school PE classes and plans to do so again in the La Grande area in hopes of starting a league. Plut will also plan a high school tournament in October to bring lacrosse players to campus.

"This is an exciting time for EOU and the surrounding community as we continue to expand sports offerings to draw student-athletes to campus," said Weissenfluh. "Coach Plut is dedicated to building a program that will meet the high expectations that we have for all of our programs with students who excel on the field and in the classroom."

Plut is a US Lacrosse Level 3 certified coach and also a US Lacrosse Certified Coaching Development Level 1 and Level 2 Trainer. She has presented a Level 1 training at the US Lacrosse Convention in 2017 and also taught and mentored five trainers at the 2018 convention.

"Between athletics and academics, EOU has so much to offer for student-athletes," said Plut. "The coaches and sport programs at Eastern have a strong culture and passion for success both on the field and in the classroom. I'm excited to join that culture and build upon it as well with a new sport. I want to thank Director of Athletics Anji Weissenfluh and the hiring committee for this opportunity."

She has helped grow the sport of lacrosse in the Bluegrass Region by putting on clinics, camps and starting a travel team, Brave, to compete in the Stickhead Fall League in Louisville, Kentucky. Plut was also on the Central Kentucky Lacrosse Association board as Vice President and Middle School Girls Commissioner, as well as on the Kentucky State Lacrosse Chapter as Vice President and Girls Lacrosse Ambassador.

Prior to coaching, Plut played club women's lacrosse at Georgia Southern University. She founded the club team in 2009 and was the president of the club for three years. Her Eagles team played against teams like Furman, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, SCAD and more. Plut started playing lacrosse at age 11.

Plut graduated from Georgia Southern in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in General Studies with a concentration in Business Management and Marketing and a minor in Psychology. She is currently working towards her Master's in Applied Sports Psychology at Adams State.
